About Your Basket
Your basket is made of a natural material called raffia, that comes from a palm tree of the same name. It is grown in Madagascar and is a source of national pride. It is regulated to be a sustainable and renewable source of fiber.
I use a coiling technique to build the form of each basket and add color and embellishments to suit my vision. Raffia is naturally water repellent, but I coat each piece with a light finish of beeswax, to make it easy to dust and maintain

Meet the Maker
I use seasonal inspirations to create my objects and to connect with the beauty and mystery of the natural world.
How it’s Made
I source and prepare my basket weaving materials from sustainable manufacturers or from my own property. The embellishments I use are gathered during my forest rambles, city walks, or travels. I am drawn to the old, the intricate, the unusual items I find on the street or in nature. I often hand dye my materials and fabrics. My weaving techniques are traditional, but I strive to include a mark of my own personality rather than copy some other tradition exactly. This basket features fiber dyed with black and embellished with a vintage Afghani necklace bead made from silver and Lapis Lazuli. It is about 4 inches in diameter.
